What Have The Tories Done For Us?
Under Labour the country was brought to the edge of a precipice, under the Tories it took a great step forward...
OK that subtitle is mean. The UK did not fall into a chasm under 14 years of light blue Labour Light, but they didn’t turn the country around either, they just wandered back and forth along the edge. They promised almost as much as the SNP and delivered almost as little. That’s the reason the electorate is almost certain to pick the full blooded red Labour for the next few years.
Unlike the Romans, who famously gave the Jews roads, aqueducts, public health, baths, law and order etc. etc., the Tories have given the UK very little.
They did (thanks to Farage pushing them) get us out of the EU officially and Michael Gove’s education reform seems to have given us a small number of excellent new schools to compete with the general mass of poor state schooling. They also commissioned a couple of nuclear power plants, finished the cross-London Elizabeth line and started the new railway from London to Oop North. All of these things have been built more slowly and more expensively than promised thanks to idiot regulations and regulators1
Beyond those few achievements, and all should be qualified with notes about all sorts of limitations, they did next to nothing positive for the UK.
I’m reminded of the general confession in Matins according to the Anglican Book of Common Prayer:
ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us….
The Tory party is is guilty of all of this. They erred and strayed from the ways of Thatcherism, let alone God in numerous ways and they often acted like sheep, lost or not. They certainly followed the devices and desires of their own hearts and had affairs and parties while insisting everyone else stay at home. They offended in numerous ways and as a result there is indeed no health in them.
But let’s delve in more detail into what
We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done
What they left undone
Contrary to claims in (I think) every single election they failed to reduce immigration. Really this was a bare minimum requirement. Sure they blame their failures on the EU, the ECHR, the UK courts and so on, but all that says is that they are incompetent at passing laws. Brexit was, in part, supposed to fix this by returning sovereignty to Parliament, yet despite this they still couldn’t actually pass immigration laws that worked.
In fact talking of Brexit, something else they left undone was repealing the junk regulations that the EU forced on the UK in so many areas. The so-called “Great Repeal Bill” didn’t repeal much of anything
Despite alarm in the chattering classes about “austerity” and “NHS cuts”, they generally failed to reduce government spending on anything including the bloated NHS and of course they splurged enormously during the covidiocy.
Indeed, despite numerous whinges about “the blob” of bureaucracy they didn’t reduce it at all and that, probably, is the biggest issue and the root cause of all the other failures and mediocre successes
The other thing that they didn’t do is robustly defend some of their actual achievements. For example they had an excellent report on the (lack of) embedded racism in the UK which was panned by all the activists because it gave the wrong answer and they did a shitty job of making the point that the activists were highly motivated to disagree because they would be out of a job.
What they have done that they ought not
There are a couple of obvious areas where the Tories did things that they really shouldn’t have.
The first is all the greenery BS regarding NetZero. The Tories are supposed to be the party that can do sums yet they completely and utterly failed to do the sums about the costs of NetZero and “renewables” in general. Combine that with the ridiculous fracking ban and you have a party that has shafted the poor who cannot afford to replace their heating systems or cars and can’t afford the now expensive energy that would be cheaper if the UK had its own sources of gas.
The second was allowing the country to be stampeded into the lockdowns and other BS of the Covidiocy. This starts with a failure to properly critique the Imperial College models that were so buggy they couldn’t even produce repeatable results. It is possible to give them a slight pass for the first couple of months but sometime around June 2020 we all knew that the wuflu killed old people and really didn’t much harm the rest of us. All the lockdowns and crap after that, particularly the way that certain Tories salivated at vaccine passports and other coercive crap, was a huge waste of money, caused massive social harm, lots of inflation and totally failed to save a single life. The fact that while they were locking down the country they, themselves, were partying, carrying on affairs and generally flouting all the rules everyone else had to obey is just icing on the cake.
A partial third one that mostly goes in the things left undone category is that they utterly failed to present a proper defense to the wokist tranzies until far too late. Eventually the Cass report and some of the revelations about Mermaids and Stonewall seems to have started the process of killing that idiocy but the Tories as a whole entirely failed to stop that idiocy and related wokism infect large parts of the bureaucracy. In fact morons like Penny Mordaunt jumped on to the “women can have penises” bandwagon when they totally didn’t need to and they allowed goverment departments to pay Stonewall and other woke NGOs millions in “training” and so on. They should have cut that crap out as part of “austerity” but they didn’t and instead provided government money to activists who hate them.
The rest of the confession
But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.
This is a real problem. They have not confessed their faults. They have shown no sign that they are penitent. And something tells me they have no desire to live a godly, righteous, and sober life.
Hopefully they can spend the time after they lose their seats to reflect on their sins and look for repentance. Sadly I doubt they will.
The Tory party deserves to be obliterated this week and it looks like they will. It is entirely their fault.
The nuke issue was discussed here
It's hard to blame British voters for holding their noses and voting Labour, even knowing how bad a new Labour government could be ... they've been voting Tory and getting Labour policy anyway, and nothing seems to persuade the Tories that they should actually _do_ any of the things they promised to do. Between Rishi's Labour-lite and Farage's I-Can't-Believe-It's-Not-Conservative, Labour is likely to win huge numbers of seats by tiny margins ... yet I predict they'll pretend their huge number of seats is a "firm mandate" to implement all of their wilder policies. I suspect in Starmer's mind, this is his chance to be a "Second Attlee" and impose generational changes on the British state.
I am thankful for the Tories proving that the Republicans (sans Trump and a few others) aren't the most useless people in the world.
