Someone, who I predict will be a “known wolf” radical of the Antifa persuasion, tried to shoot at Donald Trump. After several hours the basics seem clear. The would-be assassin gave Trump a bloody ear, killed one random person attending the rally and wounded two others, at least one seriously. He was then shot dead by a Secret Service sniper. Contrary to the desires of certain people, this was not a false flag1, it was a serious assassination attempt that killed actual people, though fortunately for the US, not the target.
Blame
There are a ton of questions to be asked and blame to be spread around and it is way too soon for anyone to blame specific individuals for their failings on the day or in the days immediately before when the rally was being planned. However we can quite fairly lay blame for the tension that led to the perpetrator thinking that killing Trump was a good idea.
Those people are all the lefties in the media/political classes who have said in various ways again and again that Trump is a threat to democracy, that Trump will be a dictator and so on. That specifically includes Rick Wilson, David Aaronvitch, Keith Olbermann, John McWhorter2 - all of whom have called for Trump to be killed - and those like them who have also said similar things, as well as whatever part of the DNC/Biden Campaign was responsible for flat out lying about the contents of project 2025 and tying it to Trump
Aside: In the interests of fairness I should note that I have predicted President Biden’s death3. That’s not a wish, far from it, it’s just a statement of what I fear will happen in the next couple of months.
The left side of the political spectrum in the US has normalized political violence. Not just against Trump. See BLM, Antifa, Queers for Palestine and the various Trans “rights” activists. Even non-violent but disruptive protests such as those by the various anti-oil groups have been accepted as OK with the perpetrators allowed to disrupt daily life and not face much if any sanction for doing so. Indeed when some of these various activist scum are arrested, the lefty DAs just refuse to prosecute.
Double Standards
To a degree this normalization would be OK if it were neutral, but it isn’t and we all know this. If you post threats of any sort against (P)Resident Biden, no matter how implausible, you get a 6am no-knock raid that ends up with you being shot dead and your corpse left on the sidewalk for hours. If you are a trans-teen and you shoot up a school, your motivations are deliberately obscured. And so on.
The left is allowed to throw tantrums, attack Jewish students, have fiery but mostly peaceful protests and sometimes even murderous shooting sprees with little or no punishment. The right is not and we have all noticed this.
Just as we all noticed back in 2020 that Joe Biden was showing signs of senility. And for that matter noticed that the 2020 election had all sorts of peculiarities that all, mysteriously, benefited the Democrats. Democrats can shout (correctly) that few if any of the voter fraud complaints about 2020 have been proven, they cannot however prove that the 2020 election was free of fraud or that fraud was evenly distributed. Just as the actually mostly peaceful January 6 protestors have been dragged through the courts for years on charges that seem wildly overstated and unlike the reaction when lefty groups disrupt proceedings.
The Democrats Are Rightly Very Scared
Because the Dems and their Deep State allies are slightly smarter than nematodes they can instinctively tell that their interests are going to be negatively impacted by a second Trump term combined with GOP majorities in the house and senate. They have got two choices, one is to negotiate and try to minimize the impact. The other is to fight it. Unfortunately fighting it makes it worse if you lose. This seems to be something the Democrats may now be vaguely grasping, but not properly.
The Dems claimed to fear a second Trump presidency but their fears were illogical (they may be less illogical now because revenge is a thing) because Trump in his first term accomplished relatively little. Yes he did a good job on judicial appointments and in foreign policy but most of what he wanted to do other than that was stymied by the various parts of the bureaucracy and by the relentless verbal and bureaucratic (Russiagate) attacks on him by all and sundry.
Assuming Trump wins and the Republicans have a decent majority in both houses of congress - something that this weekend’s events have likely assisted - then there could be a lot of payback. And for good reason, because not unlike original 13 states with their complaints against King George, the governing classes and their media allies have ignored complaints about their behavior and regularly poured gasoline on the fire by trying to take out their opponents using lawfare and the threat of police action while ignoring (as noted above) actions performed by people they approve of.
Eric Cowperthwaite (among others) has drawn parallels between the end of the Roman republic and current events in the US4.
[W]e are experiencing yet more of this crazy lawfare that characterized The Late Republic.
What has happened is that the Supreme Court recently held that the President of the United States has immunity from criminal prosecution for actions taken that are official acts within the President’s duties and powers in the Constitution. […]
What was important on a broad scale, grand scheme of things perspective, is that the Supreme Court was clearly trying to head off the Late Republic style lawfare with a formal decision that instantiates the precedent and practice of 240 years of the American Republic. And Chuck Schumer, Senate Majority Leader, is having none of it.
Aside from the above points about lawfare at this level being very bad for the Republic, what Schumer is trying to do has major problems.
I cannot see how it is Constitutional to pass legislation that changes a President’s actions from official to unofficial. I really cannot imagine the Supreme Court allowing that to stand.
This is almost certainly an Ex Post Facto law, which is absolutely not Constitutional. This is established in Article 1, Section 9, Clause 3 of the Constitution: “No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.”
Since it seems to be directed against one specific person, it may also be a Bill of Attainder, where you punish a specific person or group of people. This is as opposed to laws which apply to everyone, equally.
This is not going to end well and its going to end even less well if the Democrats do not start making some attempt to dial down the rhetoric, stop the lawfare and so on.
If Schumer achieves what he is trying to do and is able to override the Constitution, punish one specific person by law, and then put him in jail, it is 100% certain that the Republicans will do the same when they control the Senate and House. Most likely after the November, 2024 election. They will go after Biden and Obama without any doubt. And maybe Bill Clinton.
Sadly many Democrats and their hangers on seem very unclear on concepts like “what goes around comes around”. The more they double down on trying to stop Trump, the more they claim that only they can “save democracy” and that those who object are fascists etc. the more they are going to drive their opponents to do all those things they fear. That may give their corpses some satisfaction that they were right, but it won’t help the USA remain a united and peaceful country.
Also, because scared people often lash out, I expect more violence and legal threats from the Dems and allies as they double down on fighting Trump instead of trying to soften the blow. I predict they will regret this one way or another. Most importantly I hope that their efforts do not lead to non-judicial retaliation because the people being dissed and oppressed are the ones with most of the guns.
O-Rings of Politics
You may recall back in the 1980s the space shuttle blew up shortly after launch because it had launched on a too cold day and the rubber O-rings that were supposed to stop leaks had malfunctioned due to the low temperature. It later transpired that NASA had been vaguely aware of the O-ring problem but had decided that because nothing really bad had happened on previous flights, nothing catastrophically bad was ever going to happen. Then one day it was just a degree colder than before and boom.
In much the same way I think the Democrats, the bureaucrats and the rest of the chattering classes think that because no eruption of armed resistance has yet occurred as a result of the provocations to date, nothing will happen with future provocations. This seems to me to be dangerously optimistic.
"However we can quite fairly lay blame for the tension that led to the perpetrator thinking that killing Trump was a good idea."
That ain't the half of it - "A week ago, Joe Biden said that "it's time to put President Trump in a bullseye" ...Perhaps the shooter saw that and acted upon it, took the vile campaign rhetoric for real - and put not only President Trump but also his supporters in a bullseye, and came within a centimeter of killing President Trump. Biden came within a centimeter of initiating a cascade which could have led to a second American civil war. I think it was divine providence which saved us from that." https://streamfortyseven.substack.com/p/intemperate-remarks-in-a-divided
As noted in your post, leftists have normalized political violence, Soros DA's have refused to prosecute it, and NYTimes and other pundits have advocated assassination of President Trump. So it was only a matter of time until 'someone' tried it on July 13. The circumstances of that effort strongly suggest coordination or control of that 'someone' (the shooter), though so far no 'proof-positive' of such a connection have emerged: https://peterdanielmiller.substack.com/p/proof-positive
